This week during the regularly scheduled Tuesday update Splinterlands introduced a major new addition to the Splinterlands gaming experience: The Campaign Mode - Book 1: Waur Medge Academy.
This new mode is primarily targeted a new players as it let's them get a taste of Splinterlands experience by giving them a complete Beginner Deck absolutely free.
New players can use this new beginner deck to play in any format with the exception of Survival mode. They can even use these new Foundation Cards in Guild Brawls, which would actually improve experience for the smaller guilds that have players with old sets and are currently having trouble filling Modern Frays.
How to get your full Foundation Set:
To earn your set of Foundation cards you need to go to:
Play -> Campaign
After clicking Campaign you will be on the Campaign screen where you click on: Book 1 - Waur Medge Academy:
After you click on Book 1 you will be taken to the following screen:
Click on Chapter 1: Welcome to Waur Medge and start your campaign. As you complete chapters you will earn Glint tokens and Foundation Cards: summoners (now called Archons) and units:
As you complete each Chapter you will need to claim your rewards for completing it, for example after the first chapter you claim and receive two summoners and 100 Glint tokens:
First Chapter is basically an introduction to Splinterlands and showcases some of the Splinterlands lore. The second chapter actually starts teaching you about archons (summoners) and how to use them. You are guided through the basic mechanics of the game and you get to watch the battles which is satisfactory as these battles are designed for you to win :)
On the other hand if you fail to follow the instructions and don't put together the team correctly you will loose and you will not get the rewards for that chapter. You will be given an opportunity to try again so this is really a learning experience for the new players:
There are total of eleven chapters so in addition to the full set of archons and units for all splinters you receive 1,100 Glint for going thru the new Campaign mode.
When you complete the last chapter you will be invited to play real ranked battles:
New players will be able to receive SPS and Glint rewards using just this Foundation Set of cards, however they would still need to have SPS tokens staked.
In the future there will be more chapters for this first book and more campaign books, foundation booster packs and cards will become combinable as well as other opportunities to earn something useful as a new player.

Foundation Set and Brawls
After Chaos Legion set was restricted to Wild only and no longer playable in Modern the Brawls were re-vamped where you can no longer use Chaos Legion set cards in the Modern Brawl Frays.
What I have observed is that top guild that play in higher brawl tiers tend to have players who can adapt to this change fairly easily. This is not the case in the guild that play in Brawls tier three and below.
I noticed that Tier Tree brawls have a lot less players entering the frays. Right now I assign players that don't even play to the modern frays and we get free wins.
It has gotten so bad in Tier Three brawls that we got 1st place without really playing almost any of the modern frays!:
With the release of the Foundation set at least the non-gold foil frays can be filled and actually played with the Foundation set and that is a good thing to keep the existing players engaged.
Conclusion
I believe this is a great step forward for new players in Splinterlands as well as helping the existing players to stay more engaged with the game. Over time Splinterlands intends to build more features into the Campaign mode and that would be great for the game.
