Splinterland's: Campaign mode is fun to play.
In my college days, I used to play Age of Empires, and when there was no friend to play with in Multiplayer battle, I liked to play the Campaign mode of the Game. The best thing about that mode is that even though I am still playing against the computer player, I am not starting from scratch. Also, I loved the "narratives" or stories that they kept telling and requesting that I perform the action. Even though it is still a computer player, but interaction and narratives make the playing more interesting and desirable. I am happy the Splinterland's also started the Campaign Mode and best part of this Campaign mode is that Splinterland's is awarding the game assets that currently include "Glint" (in-game currency) and the Foundation cards
If you want to start to play in the Campaign mode, you can play at here or you can just to the "Play" menu and select the campaign as it is shown or highlighted in the yellow in above screenshot. Though currently there is no SPS rewards for playing but you still can earn Glint and foundation card.
Currently, campaign mode has just launched, and the current Book has 11 chapters. Splinterland's is currently working on the Book2. I guess they will collect feedback of Book1 and observe the player behaviour to launch the Book 2. I also remember when they launched Conclave Arcana and mention the "Archons", "Bloodline", and Dominion they were actually linking the game with story type of play.
Currently, I have completed 2 chapter of the Book and got the rewards for completing them too. By completing the first chapter of the Book 1, I got the 100 Glint, 1 foundation Summoner, and 1 unit card with melee attack.
Since completing the Book 1 rewarded me with the Archon/Summoner + Unit/Monster , therefor Chapter 2 uses the rewards of the Chapter 1 to further progress in the story. I got to play the battle with system,

After winning the battle, I got the further rewards that include 100 Glint and one more Foundation card.
Till now, it is interesting but they are are very short. I guess maybe in the future they have a mission in them that you need to complete in the game.
Apart from making game interesting, I see them as "gamification" of "How to play" training in Campaign mode. New player can easily learn "How To play" through Campaign Mode. Currently I am not sure hoe these cards will be used in the "Ranked" game or if there will be creation of another league like "Campaign" league but overall it is fresh breeze and give the game development to experiment with their creativity. Since no SPS is rewarded in this mode, so it give game a scope to experiment and check on the player feedback.
My 2 Cents.
I personally loved the idea but it is too early to comment. I guess it give team much broader scope to enhance the game play and also it can be used as a landing point of the new players before they land on the "Ranked" battles. I am going to complete Book 1 in next couple of days and might further share my observation.
If you have not played Splinterlands or will be returning player, then I will say let give Splinterlands a try.
