Welcome to GOZO island! Let’s visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu together today. The basilica is in L-Għarb, located on the smaller island of the Maltese archipelago : GOZO.
Gozo ~ MALTA 🇲🇹 lies in the beautiful sunny Mediterranean Sea. We will see the beautiful exterior of the church building. Discover some of the stunning architectural features, we go inside and later outside again to check out the large mosaics on the curved walls.
I visited this island while I was living on Malta itself.
Come along and discover it all together with me.

Let’s start our walk now.
As you can see already, it was a very sunny and warm day when we visit this basilica on a beautiful august day. Perfect to discover new things me thinks.
A little bridge with statues on each side leads you towards the large open square in front of it. It is a large area, especially if you look at the size of the people around, you see it is big.
IMG_5202.jpeg

Wandering slowly over the bridge we see on the left side a beautiful decorated area. The walls are covered with mosaics.
IMG_5205.jpeg

Next to these decorated walls there is a statue of a woman, it is like she walks towards the church.
IMG_5206.jpeg

Shall we check out the basilica first?
Yes, I agree… we will come back later for the mosaics. Don’t miss them, they are beautiful.

We wander towards the entrance and check out the floor under our feet. We look up again and see the entrance.
IMG_5207.jpeg

On the left side there is a long small tower that stands almost loose from the basilica itself. It has a clock in the top.
IMG_5212.jpeg

The large entrance. The steps are guiding you up… it is huge, the building I mean. The intricate details are worth spending some time to observe them in front of the entrance to the basilica - church building.
IMG_5209.jpeg

We enter and have a look inside. Wow, it is beautiful and so bright inside. Nice and cold too. One feels small for sure… when you look up.
IMG_5221.jpeg

After we cooled down a bit in the shade inside, we go outside again to check out some of the details we can find further.
IMG_5211.jpeg

The side of the church building is stunning. The Rose Windows…
IMG_5213.jpeg

Beautiful aren’t they?
IMG_5219.jpeg

The arches and its details on the side of the entrance not easily seen. Such a beautiful architecture.
IMG_5220.jpeg

Now we are wandering outside, come and let’s check out the mosaics. Such a beautiful colourful display. Well depicted.
IMG_5222.jpeg

Standing a bit back we see the right side of the walls and its imagery - the stories.
IMG_5210.jpeg

Both sides. It is a bit too large to really get into one photo. Luckily the sun was in the right spot and didn’t blind us on these bright views.
IMG_5208.jpeg

The stones used… a little close up.
IMG_5214.jpeg

Very vibrant with the gold coloured ones.
IMG_5217.jpeg

Even the back side of the walls are decorated with beautiful stones / mosaics.
IMG_5218.jpeg

We walk to the other side of the open square to have one more look around before we say bye bye.

I definitely recommend a visit to this area when you visit the island of Gozo. The views are stunning too. You see mountains and even the sea.
A quick ferry ride from Malta island takes you to Gozo easily in about 20 to 25 minutes. As foot passengers or with your (rental) car.

…and here I say that’s all for today’s post my friends.
Join me next time for more updates, adventures, #stories and photographs.
Even my own artworks, once in a while, will come by.
Thank you so much for looking, and reading.
