Today is a glorious day!
I mean, all days are pretty dang glorious to moi, but today is especially glorious because at 12:02 P.M. my darling girl turned 20 years old!
How in the dang world do I have a kid in their second decade? It doesn't seem real.
Side bar: Hat tip to the glorious lady I ran into at Walmart a couple days ago while buying all the stuff for the party, the incredulous look upon her countenance while she forcefully asserted there was no way I looked old enough to have a child that age did wonders for my vibe. Walmart lady, you are a gem!
Okay, back to parties. Yes, plural.
Since the girl's bday was midweek and most everyone in her age group has these things called adult responsibilities, I offered to make her dinner on her birthday, and then we would have a party on Saturday. It's also sorta finals time for both she and I as we a both in college, so things are a bit brisk in the to do department, but at this point I can proudly say I am a professional at time and event planning and management.
So, this morning, after a dissection lab, two tests, finishing up a case study concept map that I worked on developing with my nursing students, and composing and typing up a six page APA paper, I got to work on the lasagna. Before the papers I shaped and baked the artisan bread that will be tonight's garlic bread. Yesterday, after class I made the dessert, a family birthday favorite Snickers pie (It's like a cheesecake).
It's been a trip.
And the trip is just beginning. In a bit of a nostalgic throwback to the kid's younger years, I am also constructing a pinata. With one child having their birthday after Easter and one after Halloween, the pinata tradition was born from me going down to the dreaded Walmart the day after those holidays and buying an obscene amount of half price candy. I then crafted the most ridiculously large and hard to destroy pinatas that became legend. The Minecraft Creeper one and the one I made with chicken wire that could not be killed stand out as examples of excellence.
Anyway, I am making a pinata for Saturday's party, which also includes about 100 cupcakes, punch, ice cream, and a bonfire. At this point I have no idea how many people will be in attendance, but that's kinda standard for any fete at my house, there could be 10-150, no one really knows.
So yes, it is a lot of work. Yes, I am a little high strung and a teensy bit worn out, but you know what, it's so, so worth it. Life is wonderful, and celebrating those who bless your life by being in it, especially your children, just makes things even more so glorious.
And now, back to work!!
And as most of the time, all of the images in this post were taken on the author's currently flour dusted and slightly lasagna sauced iPhone.
