One of the reasons I enjoy going out on Sundays is just how easy it is. No matter how far the journey is, you’ll most likely have a smooth ride. Unless there is an accident on the road, something blocking passage and causing traffic, or just simply a case of bad roads… either way, Sundays are one of the best days to go out and have fun.

It’s that day that even in this jam-packed Lagos, you’ll still be able to have a sense of control over your time of departure and time of arrival. You can get on the road knowing that by a set time, you could get to wherever it is that you’re going. This is the beauty of Sundays.

Well, the reason for this is not rocket science. Sunday is a general holiday for most people, and many prefer to use that day to either relax or prepare for the coming week. So, people are spending it with family and friends, indoors. And also, the fact that the sunshine on Sundays is usually brutal and unnecessarily harsh so it doesn’t help matters at all.

When the Sunday service is over, the only thing on people’s minds is to rush home, away from the sunlight. Relax and watch TV because Monday marks the start of another round of hectic workdays. And for those who don’t go to church, it’s the day that they get to sleep in, and wake up as late as they want. They can catch up on old chores that they’re yet to do and also relax.

Sundays will always be one of the best days of the week. And that’s why, while everyone is indoors enjoying the free day that Sunday is, there are fewer people on the road. There are fewer cars, fewer shops are open, and that makes for a somewhat open highway.

I’m not saying that there won’t be cars on the road at all, I’m just saying that the number of vehicles on the road on a Sunday can’t ever be compared to the number of vehicles on any other day of the week. I’ve noticed that the roads are always more jam-packed on Monday mornings and Friday evenings. And get this, Friday evenings are always the worst!

On Monday mornings, everyone is going to work. And some people live at their workplace and return home on Fridays. However, on Monday, everyone goes to work, and the road will be teeming with all of them. On Friday evenings, though, when they’re all coming back, they won’t be the only ones. As the workers are returning home, the partygoers are also stepping out. Fridays always seem to be the best time for them. Fridays and Saturdays.

But Sundays are usually calmer and quieter. It’s as if the solemnity of the day convinces the people that staying home is much better than going out, even if it’s for a flimsy reason. And that’s why people can comfortably travel long distances on Sundays. I know someone who only travels interstate on Sundays, because that’s the best time for him to experience fewer cars on the road.

And of course, for some reason, Sundays are also the days when hotspots are actually more enjoyable. For someone like me who doesn’t like crowds, going to cinemas, restaurants, and cafes on Sundays has always proven to be better than any other weekend. For the best experience though, go in the early days of the week. Like Monday or Tuesday afternoons. But then, who in this economy can afford to go flexing on a Monday or Tuesday?

So, Sundays are one of my best days, and it’s no riddle why I picked it for my relaxation day. Whether I choose to spend it indoors or take it outside, I know that I won’t have to deal with the usual traffic problems. And so far, it’s been working great for me.
