If there’s one thing I love to do, it’s discover special corners, and luckily, Lara state is full of them. Whether you want to disconnect, spend time with friends or family, or simply break the routine, there’s always a place you can escape to and experience something different. Today, I want to tell you about some of my favorite spots here—places I’ve visited more than once because they simply have a unique charm.
Si hay algo que amo hacer es descubrir rincones especiales, y por suerte, el estado Lara está lleno de ellos. Ya sea para desconectar, pasar un rato con amigos o familia, o simplemente cambiar de rutina, siempre hay un sitio al que se puede escapar y vivir una experiencia distinta. Hoy quiero hablarte de algunos de mis lugares favoritos aquí, esos a los que he vuelto más de una vez porque simplemente tienen algo que los hace únicos.
One of the first places you have to visit if you’re in Lara is Manto de la Divina Pastora. It isn’t just a visually beautiful spot; it’s also full of history, spirituality, and tradition. It’s located in the city of Barquisimeto and is one of the country’s most emblematic religious sites. Entrance to the viewpoint costs a symbolic $1, which makes it very accessible, and once there, you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the city.
Uno de los primeros lugares que tienes que visitar si estás en Lara es el Manto de la Divina Pastora. No solo es un sitio hermoso desde lo visual, sino que también está lleno de historia, espiritualidad y tradición. Se encuentra en la ciudad de Barquisimeto y es uno de los lugares religiosos más emblemáticos del país. La entrada al mirador tiene un valor simbólico de 1$, lo cual lo hace bastante accesible, y una vez allí, puedes disfrutar de una vista panorámica impresionante de la ciudad.
Manto de la Divina Pastora is not just any structure; it’s an imposing architectural masterpiece that represents the Divine Shepherdess, the spiritual patron of the state. What I love about this place is that it manages to blend modern elements with the sacred. You can feel the peace of the area while admiring its beauty from above. Moreover, in the surroundings, there is always a variety of crafts available—rosaries, paintings, carved images, as well as typical sweets, jams, preserves, and other traditional foods. It’s an ideal spot to visit with family, friends, or even to enjoy a moment of calm on your own.
El Manto no es una estructura cualquiera; es una obra arquitectónica imponente que representa a la Divina Pastora, patrona espiritual del estado. Lo que me encanta de este sitio es que logra mezclar lo moderno con lo sagrado. Puedes sentir la paz del lugar mientras admiras su belleza desde lo alto. Además, en los alrededores siempre hay una variedad de artesanías que puedes llevarte como recuerdo o para regalar. Desde rosarios, cuadros, imágenes talladas, hasta dulces típicos, papelones, conservas y otras comidas tradicionales. Es un espacio ideal para ir con la familia, con amigos, o incluso para disfrutar un rato de calma contigo mismo.
But if you’re more inclined to connect with nature, breathe in fresh air, and see postcard-perfect landscapes, then you must visit Las Lomas de Cubiro. This place has a magical quality. It is located in the Jiménez municipality, and as soon as you arrive, you feel the change in pace—everything is more tranquil and serene. The breeze is cool, the climate is delightful, and the green of the fields invites you to linger.
Pero si lo tuyo es más conectarte con la naturaleza, respirar aire fresco y ver paisajes de esos que parecen de postal, entonces tienes que visitar Las Lomas de Cubiro. Este lugar tiene algo mágico. Está ubicado en el municipio Jiménez, y en cuanto llegas, sientes que el ritmo cambia, todo es más tranquilo, más sereno. La brisa es fresca, el clima es delicioso, y el verde de los campos te invita a quedarte.
It’s a perfect place to disconnect from the city and reconnect with the earth. Personally, I love going there to enjoy some delicious cachapas with handmade cheese—beautifully golden—and, of course, the classic strawberries and cream that are a must. There are many roadside vendors, with friendly people who always greet you with a smile. The best part is that you can sit at a rustic outdoor table with the best view, without any need for luxury. The experience is authentic, simple, and very pleasant.
Es un sitio perfecto para desconectarte de la ciudad y reconectar con la tierra. A mí personalmente me encanta ir para disfrutar de unas buenas cachapas con queso de mano, bonitos bien doraditos y, por supuesto, las clásicas fresas con crema que no pueden faltar. Hay muchas ventas al borde de la carretera, atendidas por personas amables que siempre te reciben con una sonrisa. Lo mejor es que puedes sentarte en una mesa rústica al aire libre, con la mejor vista y sin necesidad de ningún lujo. La experiencia es auténtica, sencilla y muy agradable.
Every time I go, I bring my little Kyoto along, and I can assure you that he enjoys it the most. The hills are a perfect space for dogs because they can run free, explore, and play without worries. Watching him happily wag his tail while running through the field is one of those small moments that make everything worthwhile. And if you have kids, it’s also ideal for them. There are horses, picnic areas, and plenty of outdoor play space.
Cada vez que voy, llevo conmigo a mi pequeño Kyoto, y te puedo asegurar que él es quien más disfruta. Las lomas son un espacio perfecto para los perritos porque pueden correr libres, explorar y jugar sin preocupaciones. Verlo feliz, moviendo la cola mientras corre por el campo, es uno de esos pequeños momentos que hacen que todo valga la pena. Y si tienes niños, también es ideal para ellos. Hay caballos, zonas de picnic, y mucho espacio para juegos al aire libre.
Another place I’ve had the pleasure of visiting—and one I wholeheartedly recommend—is the Dam in El Tocuyo. Although it’s not as well-known as other tourist destinations, it has a very special charm. This dam is not only important in the region for its water utility but also holds historical value. It was built to harness the waters of the Tocuyo River and has been a meeting point for families and groups of friends for years.
The beauty of this place is that you can spend the whole day there. There are green areas where you can set up a grill, bring your food, your picnic blanket, foldable chairs, and enjoy a day immersed in nature. It’s very common to see groups preparing barbecue, listening to music, or simply resting under the shade of the trees.
Otro lugar que he tenido el gusto de conocer y que también recomiendo con los ojos cerrados es la Represa Dos Cerritos en El Tocuyo. Aunque no es tan conocida como otros destinos turísticos, tiene un encanto muy especial. Esta represa no solo tiene importancia en la región por su función hídrica, sino también por su valor histórico. Se construyó para el aprovechamiento de las aguas del río Tocuyo y desde hace años es un punto de encuentro para familias y grupos de amigos.
Lo bonito de este lugar es que puedes pasar el día completo allí. Hay áreas verdes donde puedes armar una parrilla, llevar tu comida, tu mantel, sillas plegables y disfrutar de un día distinto en medio de la naturaleza. Es muy común ver grupos preparando carne, escuchando música o simplemente descansando bajo la sombra de los árboles.
Also, if you’re a fan of sweets (like me), you’ll love that there’s always someone nearby selling churros. Warm, freshly made, sprinkled with sugar, and sometimes filled… a treat you simply can’t resist. In my case, I have to confess that I always end up buying more than I should, but hey, no judgment on a day like this.
Además, si eres amante de los dulces (como yo), te encantará saber que en las cercanías siempre hay alguien vendiendo churros. Calientitos, recién hechos, con azúcar espolvoreada y a veces rellenos… una delicia que no se puede resistir. En mi caso, tengo que confesar que siempre termino comprando más de los que debería, pero bueno, nadie juzga en una salida así.
These three places—the Manto de la Divina Pastora, Las Lomas de Cubiro, and the dam in El Tocuyo—are just a few of the many gems I’ve had the pleasure of exploring in Lara. Each one has its own essence, its unique charm, and offers a different way to create beautiful memories. I love that in just one state we can find such diversity: spirituality, natural landscapes, delicious food, history, and hospitality.
I hope this list keeps growing over time, because I know there’s so much more for me to discover. Lara has hidden corners waiting to be found, to surprise us, and to offer us new stories to share. And even though we often get used to what’s nearby, I invite you to rediscover your state, to revisit those places you thought you knew and see them with fresh eyes. Sometimes, the best adventures are closer than we think.
Estos tres lugares —el Manto de la Divina Pastora, Las Lomas de Cubiro y la Represa en El Tocuyo— son solo algunos de los rincones que he tenido la dicha de visitar en Lara. Cada uno tiene su propia esencia, su encanto especial y una manera distinta de regalarte un recuerdo bonito. Me encanta que en un solo estado podamos encontrar tanta diversidad: espiritualidad, paisajes naturales, comida deliciosa, historia y hospitalidad.
Espero que esta lista siga creciendo con el tiempo, porque sé que aún me falta mucho por descubrir. Lara tiene rincones escondidos que esperan por ser encontrados, por sorprendernos y por darnos nuevas historias que contar. Y aunque muchas veces nos acostumbramos a lo que está cerca, te invito a redescubrir tu estado, a volver a esos lugares que quizás creías conocer y verlos con nuevos ojos. A veces, las mejores aventuras están más cerca de lo que imaginamos.
